PARAGUAY RESIDENCY PROCESSING TIME 2026: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
How long does residency in Paraguay take?
One of the most common questions we receive from clients is simple: how long does it take to get residency in Paraguay? The honest answer is that it depends on the type of residency, the quality of your documentation and how the file is prepared before it reaches the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones. This guide gives you realistic 2026 timelines for each route, explains what happens at every stage and shows you what actually causes delays.
Quick answer: processing times by type of residency
| Residency type | Preparation abroad | Official processing in Paraguay | Typical total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary residency (2 years) | 2–4 weeks | 60–90 days | 3–4 months |
| Permanent residency | 2–4 weeks | 60–90 days after eligibility is met | 3–4 months |
| SUACE investor residency | 3–6 weeks (company + investment plan) | Fast-track, usually 30–60 days | 2–3 months |
| Cédula (Paraguayan ID card) | — | 2–4 weeks after residency approval | +1 month |
These are the ranges we see in practice with complete, correctly apostilled files. Incomplete files can easily double them.
Stage by stage: where the time actually goes
1. Document preparation in your home country (2–4 weeks)
Before you travel, you need your birth certificate, criminal record certificate and, if applicable, marriage certificate, all issued recently and apostilled under the Hague Convention. Countries that are not part of the Convention require consular legalization instead, which adds time. Our full document checklist explains exactly what is required for each nationality.
2. Sworn translation (3–7 days)
Any document not issued in Spanish must be translated by a public translator registered with the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay. Standard certificates are usually delivered within a few business days. See our sworn translation service.
3. Local procedures in Paraguay (3–7 days)
Once in Asunción, you obtain the Interpol certificate, the Paraguayan criminal record certificate, the health certificate and the proof of address. With an organized schedule this is done in under a week; without one it can stretch to several weeks of queues and repeat visits.
4. Filing and review by Migraciones (60–90 days)
The application is filed at the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, which reviews the file, verifies documents and issues the residency resolution. This is the part you cannot accelerate, but you can avoid it restarting: a single missing stamp or an expired certificate means a new filing and a new clock.
5. Cédula de identidad (2–4 weeks)
After approval, the Paraguayan identity card is requested at the Departamento de Identificaciones. Once you hold the cédula you can open bank accounts, register for tax residency and operate normally.

What delays a residency application in Paraguay
- Expired certificates. Criminal records and civil certificates have validity periods; if the file is delayed, they expire and must be reissued.
- Missing or incorrect apostilles. The most frequent reason for rejection. Each document must be apostilled in the issuing country, not in Paraguay.
- Name mismatches. Differences between passport, birth certificate and translations trigger additional verification.
- Uncertified translations. Translations done by non-registered translators are not accepted.
- Peak periods. January–February and mid-year holidays slow down every public office.
Can I start before travelling to Paraguay?
Yes. Most of the preparation happens before you travel, and through a Power of Attorney we can complete several steps on your behalf. With our One Trip Residency service the process is organized so that a single trip of a few days is enough to complete the in-person requirements.

Temporary or permanent: which is faster?
Processing times at Migraciones are similar. The difference is eligibility: permanent residency is available directly to certain applicants (for example investors through SUACE or those who have already held temporary residency), while most newcomers start with the two-year temporary permit. Read our comparison of temporary vs permanent residency to choose the right route.
How we shorten the timeline
We cannot change how long the Ministry takes to review a file, but we can make sure it is reviewed only once. That means verifying every document before you travel, booking appointments in the right order, using registered translators and following up on the resolution until it is issued. In practice, clients who arrive with a pre-verified file complete the in-person stage in days rather than weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How long does temporary residency in Paraguay take in 2026?
Typically 60–90 days of official processing after filing, plus 2–4 weeks of document preparation beforehand. Around three to four months in total with a complete file.
Is there a 90-day rule for residency applications?
Migraciones aims to resolve applications within roughly 90 days of filing. This is a target, not a guarantee, and it restarts if the file is returned for corrections.
How long does the cédula take?
Usually two to four weeks after the residency resolution is issued.
Do I need to stay in Paraguay while it is processed?
No. After completing the in-person steps you can leave the country; the resolution and cédula can be collected later or handled through a Power of Attorney.
